Des Moines, IA- Two Iowa State Troopers who fell in the line of duty will be added to the state peace officer memorial. According to a news release, Governor Kim Reynolds, Lt. Governor Adam Gregg, Department of Public Safety Commissioner Stephan Bayens and the state of Iowa will honor two Iowa State Patrol Troopers, Ted Benda and Sergeant Jim K. Smith. The Des Moines Register reports that Benda died on October 20th 2021, from injuries sustained in a car accident when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. Smith was shot and killed on April 9th, 2021, as he was attempting to arrest a suspect in Grundy Center. The ceremony will take place at the Peace Officer Memorial on Friday, May 6th, at 10 AM.
