Urging prospective employers to not ask job applicants whether they are convicted felons. Ey call the Initiative Ban the box. It refers to the box on applications that asks if youre a convicted felon. Members of the human rights commissio asked the Dubuque City Council to discuss that inititative. The council talked about it at yesterdays meeting, but the commission isnt asking the city to change a law or ordinance. It says it just wants a discussion. The Commission Says it can be next to impossible for a convicted felon to find a job after prison. They will be able to let the employers know, yeah i have a criminal background but this is what happened. as opposed to checking the box and the employer says nope, even if they may be qualified. The Dubuque Area Chamber of commerce says the change could could cause safety concerns for employers. The city of dubuque itself has removed the convicted applications.
