decide who fills the chair. reporter: the volunteer forms, information to your committee? i think it s safe to say that we did not receive the responses from several individuals and the committee will make a determination as to how we respond to that lack of response. reporter: what is the status of your investigation and does this firing impede your investigation in any way? i don t think it impedes us. i think it challenges us to figure out who to work with on deconfliction. it challenges us on who in the short term understands the commitments that the director had with the vice chair and myself for committee access. but i think these are all things that can be overcome in in fact they present themselves as a problem. temporary delay possibly but nothing that s life threatening to our ability. reporter: how far along with you? i think that we re in the meat of the interview stage.
appears we re at the presidential interview stage of the obstruction piece of the special counsel probe. it is conceivable that that part of the investigation could wrap up by september 1st while the collusion part of the probe continues. as we know based on this new reporting from the new york times it appears the special counsel is taking a global scope at whether or not members of the trump campaign coordinated with foreign governments. so we are seeing now how rudy giuliani is putting public pressure on the special counsel to get this investigation wrapped up. remember, that is why he joined the trump legal team in the first place, joined with the specific intention of bringing about a quick resolution to this question of whether or not or how president trump would sit for an interview with the special counsel. jeff, you may not know the answer to this, but i wanted to get your thoughts on this is do we know why giuliani made the comments now and made the outreach to reporters
