that today starts to get longer? you get little more sunlight every day which feels great. this is the official start of winter. it feels like it s been winter for a long time. for the last month we have been dealing with a lot of winter weather. that officially, i guess, begins today. winter solstice. there is going to be a lot of ice across the central plains. possibly up to a half inch. likely see half an inch across areas of oklahoma. right along that interstate 44 area. just to the north of it in across areas of missouri. clinton, up towards columbia. in towards illinois. there is another side of this storm of the ice storm and it s across areas far to the north. we are going to be looking at a major ice storm across new england and way upstate new york up towards that charge up your guys if you can good chance you will not have power for long to do that. winter storm warnings in across much of illinois,
people expected to hit the highways over the next few days. where the ice and snow hasn t started, rain is coming down in buckets with flash flooding being reported in indiana. it s all adding up to one big travel mess. cnns nick valencia has the latest from kansas city. reporter: all day in kansas city, temperatures hovering in the 20s. it feels more like it s in the teens. snow flurries have been going on and off all day long. it s created problems for those on the road. interstate 44 in missouri has been a big concern for officials. the slick road conditions causing travelers to take their time on the roadways. it s had an impact throughout the united states. des moines, iowa, we saw cars, accidents there, people taken to the hospital. tulsa, oklahoma, oklahoma city waking up saturday morning to freezing rain and colder conditions than they wanted. back here in kansas city, the
continuing to push to the east. so interstate 44 not easy going right now. we were talking about that severe threat. we have a slight risk across much of the mississippi river valley, on into the ohio valley. we also have a moderate risk, including places like shreveport, jackson, little rock, memphis, even nashville, as we go through the afternoon. these are the areas you ll want to watch out and pay attention. we could see isolated tornadoes and damaging winds along with these. so tracking the storm system, this is today, this evening. and you can see through memphis, little rock, even northeast louisiana, seeing some strong showers and storms that will continue to push to the east as we go throughout the overnight hours into sunday. and then, it will just sort of set up shop on the east coast. sunday afternoon into the first part of monday. and then it should fizzle out. this is mainly a rain event. the reason is, very warm temperatures. we could see possible record-breaking tempera
