out these criminal charges and if he decides to unseal it and make these charges public. it will be very telling and try to get closer to this question of what the president knew and when. back to you. thanks, julia ainsley for that report. this morning, canada and the eu are among the first to threaten countermeasures in response to president trump s announcement to discuss tariffs on steel and aluminum. the announcement did did a number on the markets. nbc news chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has more. it will be 25% for steel. it will be 10% for aluminum. and it will be for a long period of time. the move, meant to target china dow going out with a decline of 430 points on the bell. moved markets fast with discussions of an international trade war. but the president, in protectionist mode, argues this will ultimately help key jobs at
others saying you know what? we don t want a trade war. we don t need that kind of static right now. the economy seems to be going along pretty well. we had good numbers this week. why would you want to disrupt that? and i think for a lot of people this question then extends to the leadership issue you are hearing discussed here this morning. my take on this is when you talk about american leadership, you have to understand, we have the biggest economy in the world. we have the biggest military in the world. we can set an example for other countries. it may be that at some point you say hey, we re taking more aggressive steps that are being imposed on other countries so that s not fair to us, but guess what? we re the big boy. chris: i want to turn to perhaps the highlight of the whole summit, and that was the meeting at least from the u.s. point of view, the meeting between president trump and president putin. here s the tone they set at the beginning of the meeting. we look forward
steel imports coming into this country, talk about a possible 25% tariff. the head of the european commission says we are prepared to take up arms, if need be. his reaction to the fact that the president may do this, is president trump ready for an international trade war? well, okay, first of all, the president does what he says he s going to do. he s been talking about steel, aluminium, cars, for 30 years. my entire practically my entire life. he is he believes in the things he believes in. there s also a national security piece to this. the american people need to understand. if a country loses its ability to produce steel, it loses something in regard to national security. a country cannot find itself importing steel from china, subjected to dumping of steel from other countries and decreasing i don t mean to interrupt this is an important issue,
if you want a trade deal with the united states, you better buy more from us than we buy from you. if it s the former, he can get that. if it s the latter, that is going to be the start of an international trade war. i was in europe. they don t know. they re examining it s like examining every word he says on trade and what is driving it. he wants everybody to lower their barriers to the sale of american goods and services and goods in their country or he wants more to buy from america than we buy from them. they don t know. in the answer lies a great deal of what the next couple years economically are growing to look like. neil: karl rove, good catching up with you. be well. thank you. neil: we re getting word now from the white house, it s working very closely with house and senate leaders on tax reform. no surprise there. the administration is keen on dramatically reforming the tax code. not only for companies but for individuals. companies seem to be coming up first in this
sure. heather: didn t take long to get to politics, less than two minutes to start it. carley: as expected. heather: thank you so much, carley. we want to know what everybody has to think about politics taking center stage, send us e-mail to friend first at foxnews.com. it s time for a change, that s from president trump doubling down on tariffs on steel and aluminum but critics warn that it could spark international trade war. griff jenkins on how the white house is not backing town and that s not entirely a surprise. no, heather, he s definitely not plan to go back down tweeting we are on the losing side of almost all trade deals, our friends and enemies have taken advantage of the u.s. for
