Scientists Detect Signs of Hidden Structure Inside Earth s Core

While most of us take the ground beneath our feet for granted, written within its complex layers, like the pages of a book, is Earth's history.

Discerning Structure and Seismic Hazards in the Sikkim Himalayas

Discerning Structure and Seismic Hazards in the Sikkim Himalayas A dense seismic network in operation since 2019 will provide new insights into the tectonics of seismically active Himalayan regions. For the past 120 million years, since India and Africa began to split apart (leaving Madagascar in between), the tectonic plate on which India sits has been moving northward. This relentless movement, along with the region’s complex geological structure, eventually led to the formation of the towering Himalayas.

Scientists believe Earth might be hiding a fifth layer to its geologic makeup

Their findings, suggesting that this inner inner core might indicate a second, extreme cooling event sometime in our world s past, are detailed in a new study recently published at the online scientific site, Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.   Dr. Joanne Stephenson, lead author and PhD researcher in the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University explained that investigating the structure of the inner core can aid in understanding more about the Earth’s history and evolution. “Traditionally we’ve been taught the Earth has four main layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core, she said in a University press release. The idea of another distinct layer was proposed a couple of decades ago, but the data has been very unclear.”
