The Romani activist and entrepreneur Rudolf Zajda passed away on the afternoon of 29 April at the age of 60 after a brief illness. His family has informed news server Romea.cz.
Mr Zajda was best known to the public as the chair of the Association of Romani Advisors in Brno, which offered unemployed Romani people many educational courses aiming to teach them foreign languages and the computer, business and management skills that could increase their chances on the labor market. International Day of the Roma. This holiday was established in 1990.
International day of the Roma was created to commemorate the first World Romani Congress of the International Romani Union. It was the first major international meeting of Romani representatives, that took place on April 7-12, 1971 in Orpington near London.
The first World Romani Congress was attended by 23 representatives from nine nations (Norway, France, Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Spain). During the congress five sub-commissions examined issues of social affairs, war crimes, education and culture. The Roma accepted the green and blue flag with a red six-spoked chakra as a national emblem of the Roma people, the song Gelem, Gelem was adopted as the anthem and the usage of word “Roma” instead of “Gypsy” was also accepted by the majority.

On Monday, 8 April, Romani people worldwide celebrate International Romani Day. This day marks the first-ever World Romani Congress, which was held near London in Orpington in 1971.
Just like last year, celebrations and commemorations of this important day are being held online.
The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra with Ida Kelarová will organize a gala concert of jazz, classical, and Romani music to mark the occasion, broadcast live on Czech Television on Thursday, April 8th, at 8.15pm.
