Gold Key – Lobby Midscale
The Highlights: The biggest challenge of renovating an 1897 property? Preserving the hotel’s unique architectural details and valuable building materials but that means some heavy lifting. The owner decided to restore a 38,000-square-foot portion of the original building (the lobby), an effort that involved rotating the 1,750-ton hotel 90 degrees and relocating it 230 feet using a computer-steered process. Remaining sections were deconstructed piece by piece to salvage wood, doors, doorknobs, windows, Tiffany glass, and bricks, which were repurposed into the team’s revised design plan. The resulting goal: to incorporate as much of these original elements in the new design while layering in modern touches.
