There seems to be a shift from prioritising expressways and megaports to agriculture and forests
Environmental promises have made a visible entry into Tamil Nadu’s politics, along with a guarded valourisation of farmer and fisher rights over big-ticket infrastructure and industrial projects. All key parties in the 2021 Assembly polls barring the AIADMK dedicated a section for “environmental protection” in their manifestos. Setting aside the justified cynicism about fulfillment of poll promises, the appearance of environment as a political concern worth flagging signals a welcome cultural shift in Tamil politics. Cochin Port Trust’s cargo handling gathers pace in last three months

The port handles 3.20 million tonnes in December
Cargo volumes and ship calls at Cochin Port Trust are exhibiting a recovery trend, despite overall decline in the nine months of the current fiscal.
The port handled the highest-ever monthly throughput of 3.20 million tonnes in December 2020, a growth of 10.55 per cent over December 2019.
Besides, the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) run by DP World at Cochin Port Trust, crossed 60,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in December, the fourth consecutive month to handle this level of containers since September 2020, as the global trade slowly rebounded from the slump induced by the pandemic.
India: ‘We’re trying to attract big container ships’
The resurgence of Willingdon Island, once a thriving business hub of all port-related activities, has been on top of the agenda for the Cochin Port Trust ever since the migration of container terminal operations to the Vallarpadam Island in 2011.
But the establishment of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) Terminal in the nearby Puthuvypeen Island in Kerala seems to have sharpened this focus, particularly with the completion of the Kochi-Mangaluru pipeline of GAIL.
The port will also be focusing on Willingdon Island to equip it for cruise tourism and setting up of captive berths (operated by companies for their in-house needs) as well as leasing out some berths based on the landlord development model with specific customers in mind, said M Beena, Chairperson, Cochin Port Trust.
