Paddling powerhouse Evy Leibfarth will splash into the Tokyo Summer Olympics sporting an enviable distinction – as the Junior World Champion in women’s slalom kayak.
The Bryson City 17-year-old, and the pride of Team USA, earned the title after her gold medal performance July 10 in Ljubljana-Tacen, Slovenia, at the weeklong International Canoe Federation’s Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships.
For extra measure, Leibfarth took bronze in the women’s slalom canoe race July 9.
“Junior Worlds has been a goal of mine for a really long time now, and I m so excited,” Leibfarth told the Citizen Times by phone after her win.
