Nicholas Paul golden, Kwesi Browne grabs bronze in Germany

Olympic-bound cyclists Nicholas Paul and Kwesi Browne pedalled to gold and bronze, respectively, in the men’s sprint event at the International Rail Tour and Cycling Bundelsiga 2021 in Germany on Sunday.
Against regional rival and fellow World Cycling Centre training partner Jair Tjon En Fa (Suriname) in the final, Paul cruised to victory in two straight rides along the 198-metre concrete track.
Sunday’s final was a repeat result of a semi-final round ride between the two at the 2021 International Belgian Track Meeting five weeks ago. There, Paul advanced to the final, but took silver after he lost to 2012 Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny of Great Britain.

Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Nicholas Paul is now ranked as the second fastest men’s individual sprinter in the world.
According to the latest International Cycling Union (UCI) rankings, released on Thursday, Paul (1,317.5 points) trails current Polish world leader Mateusz Rudyk (1,362.5 pts) and lies slightly ahead of Colombian Kevin Santiago Quintero Chavarro (1,315 pts).
Rounding off the world’s top five sprinters were Mohd Aziulhasni Awang (Malaysia) and Jair Tjon En Fa (Suriname), respectively.
TT’s Keron Bramble, who has been out of competition since the pandemic hit in mid-March last year, is ranked 58th (420 pts) while compatriot Quincy Alexander (355 pts) is 75th.

AFTER a one-year hiatus from competitive cycling, TT cyclist Nicholas Paul sees his recent silver medal performance at the International Belgian Track Meeting as a positive indicator ahead of his debut Olympic campaign.
In the men’s sprint final, the 23-year-old was unable to get past the experienced tactics of 2012 London Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny (Great Britain).

NATIONAL Olympic-bound cyclist Nicholas Paul secured a silver medal in the men s 200-metre sprint on Saturday at the 2021 International Belgian Track Meeting, after he was beaten by world champion Jason Kenny of Great Britain.
At the Eddy Merckx Cycling Center in Ghent, Belgium, on Saturday, Paul moved into the final after beating his Surinamese team-mate and training partner Jair Tjon En Fa at the last-four stage.
The TTO athlete s outing ended on an impressive and fair note, as he lost to Kenny – the multiple 2016 Olympic cycling gold medallist. Paul clocked 10.030 in the first race. However, Kenny recovered and forced the final into a third race as his picked up a win in 10.040 seconds.
