A project to modernize traffic signal equipment is coming to Galesburg. The public will not notice any significant changes as a result of the new traffic signals, however the project will provide added efficiency and reliability for the city. The project includes a total of 12 signalized intersections along Henderson Street, and at Main and Farnham streets. City Engineer Aaron Gavin tells WGIL the signal heads themselves will not be modified and there will be no additional signals. The improvements will largely be equipment hardware upgrades or additions inside the traffic signal cabinets that control the signals or on the mast arms. One of the most significant improvements will be the addition of battery backups for signals. According to Interim City Manager Wayne Carl, "The battery backups are a pretty big deal. Right now, there are no battery backups and if a traffic signal loses power, the City Street Division has to run Stop signs out to the intersection to control traffic.
The Galesburg Downtown will get another big hand towards its ongoing beautification efforts in the form of a $2 million grant. Interim City Manager Wayne Carl announced at Monday's City Council meeting that Galesburg's been approved for one of the three submissions for the State of Illinois' Rebuild Downtowns and Main Streets Grant program. The grant will fund reconstructing Parking Lot H, the lot across the street from the Orpheum Theater. The work would include landscaping and resurfacing the lot, and adding covered areas for both parking and use for events. This plan was first put forward in the Downtown Development Plan that Aldermen approved in 2016. The grant will also cover reconstructing sidewalks and curbing on Simmons from Cherry to Kellogg. Galesburg Council also breezily passed a new mural ordinance that would clear the way for more public art in town. It was clarified that although the ordinance doesn't allow murals in residentially zoned districts- th
Galesburg Aldermen approved incentives for recruiting officers to the Galesburg Police Department. Staffing shortages that have plagued departments around the U.S. have left GPD 7 officers short of what the council has budgeted. The incentives would give new officers a $2,000 sign-on bonus, and an extra $2,000 per year for up to 4 years. That means a new officer could earn up to $10,000 in bonuses potentially. The program sunsets in two years, at which point the council can evaluate if they want to continue. Aldermen also approved purchasing a new lawnmower for the greens at Bunker Links, the city-owned golf course for $67,000. Interim City Manager Wayne Carl says it will take almost a year before the machine can be delivered. That's why the council is approving the purchase a year ahead of the expected end of life of their current mower.
