Bearded Dragon Embyros Can Switch Sex Two Different Ways, Study Says

Reptiles Magazine Pogona vitticeps can change gender via sex chromosomes or hot temperatures. April 19, 2021 Elina Litovkina/Shutterstock For many egg laying reptiles, temperature of the eggs during incubation determines the sex of the hatchling. For example, a 2017 study of green sea turtle ( Chelonia mydas) hatchlings on Australia’s Reine Island found that 99 percent of the sea turtles hatched on the island for the last 20 years were female, due to the temperatures in which the eggs incubated. This is attributed to a warming planet. The bearded dragon, the most popular reptile kept as a pet, has the capability to change sex via two different sets of genes, either via sex chromosomes or via hot temperature, according to a study in the PLOS One journal.

A poor man s rainforest : why we need to stop treating soil like dirt | Soil

Last modified on Fri 16 Apr 2021 01.01 EDT Hidden under our feet is a miniature landscape made up of tunnels, caves and decaying matter. Soil is where a quarter of the species on our planet are believed to live and in this dark, quiet, damp world, death feeds life. Rotting leaves, fruits, plants and organisms are folded into the soil and burped out as something new. Good soil structure provides many nooks and crannies that house organisms, which, in turn, create an environment that suits them, directly altering – and improving – the structure of soil. Like a collective of tiny chemists, they keep soils healthy and productive by passing nutrients between them, either by collaborating or killing each other.
