What to listen out for in 2021

The Covid-19 lockdowns have accelerated the growth of podcasting at home and abroad. The desire to connect in times of isolation has attracted new players to the medium. Internationally, the continued growth of podcasting is following the well-worn capitalist expansionist logic of seeking out new consumers. Here, we look at a few trends and what they can tell us about what’s on the audio storytelling horizon for 2021. For many years the nascent South African podcast industry has been stuck in the audience/advertising bind; without high enough audience numbers, it is near impossible to attract substantial advertising investment or listener donations – the model that funds much open-access media the world over. Without access to affordable data or widespread wi-fi it is hard for podcasting to gain traction, and without revenue it is near impossible to produce quality shows.

Achiampong was invited to the role following a curatorial process led by the Contemporary Art Society. His work focuses on pop culture, class and colonialism, and has been shown at Tate Modern, Somerset House, the 57th Venice Biennale and the Institute for Creative Arts in Cape Town.

The first open art exhibition in Malta is at the Marsa-Ħamrun Bypass Posted by Vento on Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg together with Minister for Education Justyne Caruana opened the first open art exhibition in our country. This exhibition is located in the Marsa-Ħamrun Bypass and was held after a collaboration between Infrastructure Malta and MCAST. This exhibition includes 10 large frames in which the artistic work of the students of the Institute for Creative Arts at MCAST can be exhibited. Eventually this exhibition will also be open to both local and even international artists, so that they can exhibit their work in a place that sees thousands of drivers every day.
