Reporter lucy, french president Francois Holland came out to express his sorrow about this attack which was a day of celebration. 77 people confirmed dead including children at least 20 people and wounded. It was around 10 30 p. M. Local time when Authorities Say someone drove a white box truckloaded with guns and grenades full speed into a crowd of people. The group was gathered in town for a Fireworks Show for bastille day which celebrates the french revolution. Video shows people running scattering in every direction trying to get out of harms way not knowing what was going on. As Police Worked to secure the area, people were ordered to shelter in place. One of those people a man from philadelphia a colleague of mine from college. He checked in on facebook letting friends and family know that hes safe. She was apparently at the y swimming when she had heard what happened. Now police are telling us that this womans home was actually broken into overnight either wednesday or thursday morning. She apparently was out visiting her daughter overnight. Came back yesterday morning to discover a break in, lost a tv somebody other things stolen. In fact police as a result were just here yesterday but there were no smells of gas or anything like that. Now, the woman lived here most of her live with her husband who had passed away and several children all grown up. She lived here by herself. She was in the process of organizing a lifetime of memorabilia but obviously now everything is lost. Lots of questions still remain. Were hearing some theories twos what may have caused this possibly a leak in a propane tank. Possibly as a result of some copper that may have have been stolen. Police looking into that. The death toll climbing and investigators want to know who did it. It was celebration much like our independence day. Good evening im iain page. Im lucy noland. Death toll continues to rise in nice after someone drove a truck through a crowd of people celebrating bastille day. Right now at least 77 people are dead but that death toll has been climbing all night. Police say the truck driver was killed when he opened fire on a crowd and they returned fire. Authorities say the truck was filled with hand grenades and weapons. The attack came just hours after the french president announced the government would soon lift the state of emergency in place since last novembers terror attack in paris.
