Kathleen Brennan was named principal of Fort Riley Middle School, Nicole Perez was named principal of H.D. Karns Innovations Academy, Melisa Burgess was named principal of Morris Hill Elementary, and Kathy Friesen was named principal of Seitz Elementary. Brennan takes on her new role as principal after serving as vice principal of Fort Riley Middle School for three years, Perez previously served as vice principal of Arkansas City High School for three years, Burgess was an assistant principal at Fort Riley Elementary for six years, and Friesen becomes principal of Seitz Elementary School after serving as a certified reading tutor at Franklin Elementary.

And some will choose to stay there in the fall, even as schools prepare for more robust in-person instruction. Virtual academies are beginning to pop up across the state, establishing full online campuses with schedules that resemble a traditional school day, along with live, daily interactions with teachers. About 40 school districts in California have applied to register virtual academies with the California Department of Education. Locally, Rocklin, Natomas, Folsom Cordova, Davis, Washington Unified in West Sacramento and the Dry Creek Joint Elementary school districts have applications that have been approved.
