NUIG study finds 40% of homeless people in Dublin say they ve been sexually assaulted

Galway Bay FM 19 April 2021 print Galway Bay FM Newsroom – An NUI Galway study has found that 40 percent of homeless people in Dublin say they’ve been sexually assaulted. The new report called Empowerment to Rights, found that LGBT respondents faced more sexual assaults and harassment while most did not report incidents as they say it would make their situation “worse”. The study was carried out by researchers at NUIG’s human rights law clinic and Dublin charity Inner City Helping Homeless. Of the 100 people interviewed, 87 percent said their mental health had deteriorated. Among the answers to the question “what’s the hardest thing about being homeless” were loneliness, paranoia and shame.

Dublin football club Bohemians have a new strip. It was created in association with and featuring lyrics from Grammy-nominated Irish rock band Fontaines DC. Fifteen per cent of the proceeds from sales of the new strip will go to the homelessness charity Focus Ireland. âThe jersey has a real homage to Dublin on it,â says Dan Lambert, 34-year-old co-owner (with his sister) of the Bang Bang cafÃ© in Phibsborough, manager of the hip hop combo Kneecap and the recently-appointed chief operating officer of Bohemians whose main partner, Des Kelly Interiors, supported the new strip. âIt features the Poolbeg towers, the Grattan Bridge lamps. On the back it has âBeware of the risen peopleâ. We took a tracing of that. Itâs what Pearse wrote in the cell in Kilmainhamâ¦ âDublin in the rain is mineâ is on the inside collar, thatâs one of [Fontaine DCâs] lyrics.â
