Kenya Bans Somalia Flights

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) on Tuesday, May 11, suspended all flights between Kenya and Somalia with immediate effect.
A statement by KCAA seen by
Kenyans.co.ke announced that only medevac flights and United Nations flights on humanitarian missions, were exempted from the order.
It is yet to be known why the flights have been suspended.

This is barely a week after Mogadishu announced that it has restored its ties with the latter.
In a Notice to Airmen (Notam), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said flights departing for or arriving from Somalia will not be allowed for three months.
Only humanitarian deliveries and medical evacuation flights will be allowed into the country, the aviation regulator said.

The authority did not elaborate on the reasons but suggested there had been a security directive from the government to restrict air traffic between the two countries.

Kenyans.co.ke indicated that the two leaders agreed to set aside their differences after intervention from the Amir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The Amir s message was delivered by Dr Mutlaq bin Majed Al-Qahtani, who is the Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar for Counterterrorism and Mediation of Conflict Resolution.

Somalia has restored diplomatic ties with Kenya amid maritime boundary row and pledged respect for sovereignty.
President Mohamed Farmaajo spokesperson Abdirashid Hashi on May 6, said the latest move is in the interest of the two countries and based on mutual benefit and respect.
“In the interest of good neighbourliness, Federal Government of Somalia resumes Diplomatic ties with Kenya based on mutual benefit and respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-external interference, peaceful co-existence and equality,” he said.
