Editorial — The light of scrutiny: Sunshine Week lauds efforts to ensure government transparency

The right of constituents to access records that governmental bodies have collected as well as attend public meetings where vital issues are discussed remains an essential component in how we practice democracy. A self-governing system demands that citizens have access to accurate information about what their governments are doing. We can’t make good decisions about how to structure society if those granted authority to preside over these matters conduct the people’s business in secret. Laws enacted in all jurisdictions require public officials to make certain records available upon request and hold their meetings in the open. Exceptions are made to protect sensitive interests, but these are meant to be invoked only when necessary.

Editorial — Needs improvement: Local villages get poor grades for open government practices

Back Two more public bodies in Northern New York received poor grades from a government watchdog organization for their adherence to the state’s Open Meetings Law. The New York Coalition for Open Government “promotes open, transparent government and defends citizens’ right to access information from public institutions at the city, county and state levels,” according to the mission statement on its website. Based in Williamsville, the nonprofit, volunteer group is “comprised of journalists, activists, attorneys, educators, news media organizations, and other concerned citizens who value open government and freedom of information. “We believe that if government is of the people, by the people and for the people, then it should also be open to the people. but it s canadian in a sense we are much more uncomfortable reporting on people s personal lives. and we have strict information laws. you call the police and they don t have to tell you they have been to the house unless they lay charges. this not something that happened recently. how long do you think this has been going on? i can say from our reporting. that we have been reporting on his behavior for a year and a half. i wrote about domestic incidents with his wife in 2011. a domestic assault in 2008 that was dropped because of inconsistencies in his story. what do you think is going on below the surface? what is this guy s real problem? is he bi-polar? is he self medicating for untreated mood disorder? what is going on with him? your view?
