Celebrities Piers Morgan and Oprah Winfrey have become victims of a "deepfake" scandal in controversial influencer ads. The ads are using deepfake technology to falsely imply endorsements from Morgan, Nigella Lawson, and Winfrey for a self-help course called the "Genie Script." The manipulated ads have been condemned by the celebrities and have violated YouTube's policies, resulting in their removal from the platform.
On June 29, the FTC announced new Endorsement Guides (Endorsement Guides) governing the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising. The FTC last revised the Endorsement Guides in 2009.
The income-tax department has sent notices to 15 such influencers, who had flaunted their overseas holidays and luxury shopping, for paying zero or "substantially low" tax despite receiving hefty fees from companies whose products they promoted through their posts, a senior official told ET.
