from the bacteria that causes it. infections are normally mild and treated with antibiotics and while still uncommon, there has been an increase in group a strep cases this year, particularly in children under 10. professor beate kampmann is professor of paediatric infection and immunity from the london school of hygiene and tropical medicine. she said it s important to state that it s very unusual for strep a to cause serious illness many of us carry group a strep in our noses and often it s completely asymptomatic and some people get tonsillitis and then some, especially children, progress to scarlet fever, which is a more systemic infection that includes producing a toxin that, sort of, gives this rash and the fever. now, it s absolutely rare that this bacteria becomes what we call invasive. so, when we are talking about invasive group a strep, and this is unfortunately what s happened in the children who have died, and it is obviously tragic, but it is an extremely rare occurrence.
