Officers seize truck connected to Texas City killing in Laredo

TEXAS CITY Detectives have seized a pickup truck near Laredo they believe was used by the unnamed person sought in a stabbing death behind Levi Fry Intermediate School, police said Friday. Officers drove to the Texas border town after receiving a call that a vehicle matching the description of one driven by the person of interest had been spotted, said Cpl. Allen Bjerke, spokesman for the Texas City Police Department. Investigators are not releasing any more information about the person of interest because they don’t want to jeopardize the chances of finding him, Bjerke said. It wasn’t clear whether the person fled to Mexico.

Ines Matias Cadena-Barragan, 40, died from a dozen or more stab wounds, said John “D.J.” Florence, chief investigator for the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office, citing forensic experts. Investigators meanwhile are focusing on at least one person of interest in connection to Cadena-Barragan’s death, police said. The news of Cadena-Barragan’s death shocked those who knew him through his job at Texas City’s Discount Seafood Market, 2419 25th Ave N. “He was so kind,” said Belinda Scott, who jokingly referred to him as her boyfriend.

Man found dead near Levi Fry identified as Texas City resident

TEXAS CITY The man found dead Monday morning in the driveway of Levi Fry Intermediate School was identified Tuesday as Ines Matias Cadena-Barragan, 40, of Texas City, police said. Police were investigating Cadena-Barragan’s death as a homicide and had identified a person of interest, according to a statement from Texas City Police Department. A delivery driver had called police just before 7 a.m. Monday about a man lying on the ground bleeding and unresponsive in about the 300 block of 25th Ave N., police said at the time. Texas City Police ask that anyone with information pertinent to this active investigation contact the Texas City Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 409-643-5270.
