the garwood story is riddled with myths, distortions, uneasy lies and questions never to be answered. in 1965, garwood, then 19 years old, was captured by them and showed up some time in 1967. during operation homecoming in 1973 when many americans p.o.w.s were released, garwood was not among them. at his court marshal and in other accounts, fellow prisoners testified that garwood, like bergdahl, had gone awol, to the point of wearing the uniform of the north vietnamese army and trying to indockery nate fellow prisoners. he learned the language, made radio broadcasts, carried a rifle and sometimes took guard over american p.o.w.s all while his captors starved and tortured to death a number of his camp mates.
