A team of six to eight contractors worked over two days to chop down a protected pōhutukawa tree in Birkenhead and turn it into a pile of sawdust, says a local resident. The man, who does not want to be named, said the contractors spent much of the first day chopping down the large tree and putting it through a wood chipper before work resumed the next day with a stump grinder to complete the job.
