Homicide victims assistance: Grieving families criticize IMPD unit

When you lose a child, you re numb, Jude told IndyStar.  Jude said she was in no shape to go through the unthinkable motions that follow a sudden and violent death: notifying family and friends, getting the body from the coroner s office, funeral arrangements.  And when the ceremonies and paper work are complete, families are left to make sense of their loss for years to come.  Nobody should have to go through that alone, Jude said.  Lisa Brown, manager of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department s Victims Assistance Unit, doesn t want that either. Her staff of 11 paid advocates help victims of violent crime navigate the system and work through trauma. Their goal is to contact victims and families within two business days.
