Summer school helps Indigenous students prepare for college

CUSTER, S.D. (AP) The Indian University of North America, located at Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer, is hoping to make the transition for Indigenous students preparing to go off to college more successful.
The 7th Gen Summer Program, an eight-week program through a partnership with the University of South Dakota, gives Indigenous students the opportunity to live and work on the campus of The Indian University of North America. The program includes a paid internship experience and the opportunity to earn 12 college credits.
Whitney Rencountre, associate director of enrollment management, said the program aims to prepare students to enter the world of higher education armed with the tools to allow them to be successful.
The Crazy Horse Memorial: It’s the Largest Sculptural Project in History, but Will It Ever Be Finished?
In the Black Hills of South Dakota, less than a half-hour drive down the road from Mount Rushmore, just 17 miles away, another colossal mountain sculpture the largest sculptural project in history is taking shape.
The Crazy Horse Memorial officially began taking shape in 1948. No one is predicting when it will be completed.
Yet while it may be a work in progress with likely many years to go before it’s completed, it’s far enough along that already it’s a mesmerizing sight that draws more than a million visitors a year.
Arctic issues on the rise
Raina Thiele joins the show Tuesday, she has worked in the White House and planned President Obamaâs trip to the Arctic, the first ever by a sitting president. She has also worked at the Office of Management and Budget. Ducheneaux is the first Native American to head this agency within the Agriculture Department. To put this appointment into perspective, we reached out to Janie Hipp. She is the president and CEO of the Native American Agriculture Fund.

Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation announced Feb. 22 the Indian University of North America has a new leadership team for 2021: Director Joshua Rudnik, Associate Director Whitney A. Rencountre and Manager of Residence Life Nathaniel “Nate” Watahomigie.
According to Crazy Horse Memorial President and Chief Operating Officer Laurie Becvar, the new team is already working hard on preparations for this year’s summer programs in partnership with the University of South Dakota and the fall-semester Wizipan Leadership and Sustainability Program in partnership with South Dakota State University.

For the 10 percent of South Dakotans who are tribal members, the Black Hills are much more than an outdoor recreation hotspot. The Black Hills are where their origin story begins.
“Wizipan…That’s the Lakota name and it translates into “the heart of everything that is.” And that’s why the course is where it is at. Because to the Lakota people, to the Northern Cheyenne, the Black Hills is where the center of the earth, the center of the universe, hence the origin story coming out of Wind Cave,” says Barry Dunn.
