A campaign by awakened citizens has halted the work on turning Turahalli forest into a tree park, but the threat still persists. By M.A. Siraj
Turahalli forest, the focus of the city’s green activists, has been spared the fate of a tree park, thanks to the support ‘Save Turahalli’ movement gathered over a fortnight demanding that it be kept in its pristine natural form. But the threat still looms as it is part of the Vision 2022 Programme document announced by Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. An on-the-spot announcement by Forest Minister Arvind Limbavali after inspection, in response to people’s resistance, has for the time being halted the work and bulldozers have been withdrawn.

Nandita Vijay, Bengaluru ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research)-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) has developed a virus-resistant chilli variety. The institute said that it would not release the variant directly in the market but would share it with the Krishi Vignana Kendras (KVKs) across the state and country to check the efficacy of the product.
Based on the results in the location-specific KVKs, the chilli seeds may be released in the market in that particular region. We have developed a chilli variety resistant to the leaf curl virus, which causes maximum damage to the chilli plants, said Dr K Madhavi Reddy, Principal Scientist, Division of Vegetable Crops, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, at the sidelines of the ongoing National Horticulture Fair-2021 being held in the campus from February 8 to 12.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the valedictory ceremony of the five-day National Horticulture Fair here, Dinesh observed that it was tremendous success in terms of reaching out to farmers across the country.

Bengaluru, Feb 13 : Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) Director M.R. Dinesh on Friday said that the institute was able to reach out to as many as 16.3 lakh farmers through online and off-line mediums.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the valedictory ceremony of the five-day National Horticulture Fair here, Dinesh observed that it was tremendous success in terms of reaching out to farmers across the country. We had our own doubts when we thought of organising events in both mediums - virtual as well as offline mode. We had the expertise of handling people offline, as in the past that is how, we used to do it, he said.
