While schools in Johannesburg received a temporary rates tariff respite, the National Alliance of Independent Schools Associations is pushing for the scrapping of the reclassification of private schools as businesses.
Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse announced she would be holding a briefing on Monday to lay out “active steps to correct national Cogta rates and tariffs for affected educational institutions”.
Most schools under the National Alliance of Independent Schools Associations are classified as public benefit organisations – not as businesses – and have benefitted from rates exemptions.
