Congo s Catholic and Protestant churches demand inquiry into election issues

Democratic Republic of Congo's powerful Catholic bishops conference and Protestant churches on Thursday demanded an independent inquiry be opened into irregularities and alleged legal violations observed during December general elections. Congo's CENI election commission said on Sunday that President Felix Tshisekedi had secured more than 73% in the Dec. 20 vote.

Factbox-How Congo s presidential election will be decided

The presidential election will be decided in a single round, requiring a simple majority of the vote to win. The count is supposed to take place in the presence of witnesses, observers, journalists and five voters designated by the head of the polling station, and will continue without interruption until it is complete, the law says. The results are then immediately made public and posted at the polling stations before being relayed to compilation centres at the electoral district level and on to the election commission headquarters in the capital, Kinshasa.
