Ranch gives diving dogs a place to soar

Valley Center  Longtime dog lover Tamandra Michaels has long enjoyed the sport of dock diving where dogs leap long distances from a dock into a swimming pool but as a wheelchair user, she could only watch the events from the sidelines. That changed last spring with the opening of Agapé Ranch Dog Sports in Valley Center. Owners Lise Ann Strum and Scott Dike built a competition pool with a 6-foot-tall diving dock with a wheelchair-accessible ramp. It’s one of the first of its kind in the country. Now, Michaels and her 5-year-old German shepherd, Justice, not only can compete, she’s confident of winning her division at this week’s North American Diving Dogs Trials, which opened Thursday and continues through Sunday at Agapé Ranch.

Nutrition key to dog s success breaking competitive world records Feb. 9, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail (BPT) - In 2017, a two-year old whippet named Sounders was introduced to the world of competitive canine diving. Just two years later, he was breaking world records and even captured the Guinness World Record for farthest jump by a dog (dock jumping). In 2019, Sounders broke two records in Diving Dog and Fetch It! at the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge (IDC), a canine competition where some of the top dogs from across the country compete in a variety of speed and distance events. Similar to long jump in track-and-field competitions, Diving Dog involves a dog running down a 40-foot runway, chasing a bumper toy that is thrown over a pool to see how far they can jump before touching the water.
