A military protection act for assault victims announced Friday had Heath Phillips of Cincinnatus, who was abused by six men over 10 months while serving in the Navy, questioning why only women assault victims were mentioned.
Phillips, who joined the Navy in 1988 when he was 17, was attacked by six men repeatedly over 10 months, he said. He filed complaints daily as the sexual assaults and harassment continued before being dishonorably discharged in 1989 following unauthorized absences.
Today, Phillips is an advocate for mental health and sexual assault awareness and speaks to military installations all over the world, where he’s seen at least one man come forward at each event with their own stories of assault, he said.
