body to go down there. i am a recovering lawyer, but it doesn t take lawyer the know that the central lesson on watergate is that no one is above the law, not the president. not anybody else. and there is nothing in the constitution that says the president needs to be treated differently when it comes to routine things like interviews with a prosecutor. and also keep in mind that deputy attorney general rod rosenstein and robert mueller are very aware that the president might fire them. yet they have very strong statements with rosenstein saying the justice department would not be extorted. mueller threatening to subpoena. which tells me they have got really strong evidence. they believe they have got a really strong case. i think that s why they are acting this way. guy, do you share that analysis? it s certainly true that rod rosenstein who ultimately is mueller s boss and the key decision maker on what mueller does that becomes public outside of the indictments themselves has be
so even if it doesn t become law, today was a very significant day. we re going to continue to push forward to have this become law, because ultimately, i think in this country, we want special counsel to be largely protected from interference by the president. you mentioned that it s important even if it doesn t become law. if it does not get passed by both houses and signed by the president, do you currently take the position that a special counsel, any special counsel, including mueller, would have the right to challenge an unlawful firing in court anyway? he may well have. it would be a bit of a challenge to figure out how you d frame that. probably the biggest risk would be that the remaining part of the investigation, you know, you can get rid of mueller himself, and the special counsel team is still there. they still have to show up at court dates, grand jury dates, they still have their work to do.
where you know what you see on top but you don t know what s underneath. i suspect that mueller has a lot more evidence and information than has been has been reported. so i think he s pretty far down the line on a lot of issues. that s not to say i think this is coming to a quick close. well, let me ask you to speculate on another front and that is what form this will take. do you think the special counsel will emerge and lay his findings at the feet of americans and congress and say here it all is, deal with it? well, i don t think he has the authority to do that. but i think he will put together a document which covers all those things, and then it will be, i believe, the decision of the deputy attorney general, mr. rosenstein, because the
