come back monday, try again. but at the very last second, there seemed to be a deal reached between gates and mccarthy. and a 15th round again. finally, kevin mccarthy was elected to be the next speaker of the house. let me close with this. i may not know all of you, some of you are new. but i hope one thing is clear after this week. i never give up. joining me now from capital of the hills nbc news capitol correspondent julie circuits. let s talk a little bit about the deal that was made to get mccarthy over the finish line, and what you re hearing about in next epsilon with congress. a lot of concessions were made. some of the moderates are really unhappy about that. because mccarthy was willing to go pretty far in order to secure the speakership gavel. one that he has been trying to get since 2015. so some of the concessions he made to some of those hard-line conservatives, including matt gates, lauren boebert, and others, have to do with the budget, have to do with
led left to matt gates, one of the loudest critics of kevin mccarthy. so you talk saw the tension build. we saw mike rogers have to be physically stern what more can you tell us about the sick exchange. it happened pretty quickly. there was obviously a group of allies, kevin mccarthy surrounding over, and gates, convincing them to find a way to get those final votes, i m getting the speakership last night. and in the midst of that, we saw rodgers kind of lean forward, lunge towards gates, talking to him, seeming upset. and then being pulled back and the whole chamber reacted to that. democrats also telling him to

[crowd chanting] [applause] hello and welcome, i m in new york. a truly historic, chaotic, and dramatic night in washington, after four days and 15 rounds of voting. republican kevin mccarthy of california has been elected the next speaker of the house. it began at 10 pm eastern last night with a vote that saw matt gates present instead of voting for someone other than mccarthy, which is a move that mccarthy seemed surprised by. because california congressman s latest attempt sunk him. making him lose that 14th round. that was one temper spilled over. another republic by the name of mike rogers had to be restrained restrained as he appeared to confront gates. then they had to adjourn and
conservatives, including matt gates, lauren boebert, and others, have to do with the budget, have to do with the omnibus government spending, those are the big things that we are seeing here. and also, most importantly, have to do with committee assignments. namely, we are talking about the rules committee. three house freedom caucuses, such as the heart rate fraction of republicans in the house, get seats on the committee, they are essentially control the floor agenda, and another for the important thing here is the motion to vacate. they can essentially call for a vote of no confidence, threatening his speakership, he exiting the yesterday told us he s 1000 percent confident, he ll get a hold on to the gavel. but look, the world s package, which includes these concessions, it s something they haven t passed yet. that s going to happen, hopefully mccarthy, thanks one day night. it remains to see enough moderates still go along with. it take a look at what mccarthy hinted on the floor
its capacity to pursue self-determination, self-defense, and not make this sort of inter imperial great bauer s fight. fair point. molly, let me ask you this. the house passed a ukraine democracy defense land lease act, by a vote of 400 and 17 to 10, this week. i m sure you were shocked to hear the ten, who voted against it, including matt gates, paul gosar, marjorie taylor greene. the far-right of the congressional republican party is still keeping this pro putin stance. why aren t we hearing more from the democrats about this? i could ask the same question, but i want to keep asking it. this is a very unpopular stance in america right now, not backing ukraine. why there are no costs for the republicans that are doing this? it s like political malpractice. i mean, remember freedom price, remember republicans, all these democrats lost their seats because they wouldn t support this war that had nothing to do with 9/11, right?
