TOKYO – The U.S. military command in South Korea on Thursday reported that 14 people have tested positive for the coronavirus since Jan. 19, all of them new arrivals to the peninsula. South Korea reported 621 new infections Wednesday, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Seoul accounted for 179 and Gyeonggi province, home of the country’s largest U.S. base, Camp Humphreys, had 237.

. TOKYO – The daily number of new coronavirus cases in Japan’s capital city fell Monday to its lowest point in two months. South Korea, meanwhile, reported its lowest daily total since November, and a government official in Seoul said restrictions on social distancing and business closures may ease in the coming weeks. With many U.S. service members taking time off to watch the Super Bowl, reports of new coronavirus infections over the weekend until 6 p.m. Monday were comparatively low. Bases in Japan reported two and South Korea reported 24 from the previous two weeks. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Monday reported another 276 people had contracted the virus, the lowest one-day count since Dec. 7, also a Monday, according to public broadcaster NHK and metro government data.

Please support our journalism with a subscription. TOKYO – Japan’s capital city reported 618 new coronavirus patients Monday, a decline of more than 50% in new cases over the previous four days. Totals early in the week are typically low because many testing facilities are closed over the weekend, but Monday’s figures represent the first tally below 700 since Dec. 28 and below 1,000 since Jan. 12, according to public broadcaster NHK and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
