Midwives team up with Bolton Council of Mosques to deliver new antenatal service

MIDWIVES have teamed up with Bolton Council of Mosques (BCOM) to deliver a new service. Bolton NHS Foundation Trust s community midwife team is preparing to launch its new two ay antenatal clinic at the Deane-based centre next week. It comes at the trust celebrates International Day of the Midwife. The antenatal drop-in sessions will run every Monday afternoon and whilst he service is largely aimed at the diverse ethnic communities in this area including women who may not have English as a first language, it is open to all who wish to access care at the location. The drop-ins are available to discuss anything non-medical such as queries around preparation for labour, diet and other wellbeing factors during pregnancy, contraception following birth.

Praise for volunteers as Muslim burials in Bolton rise during pandemic

Here we speak to those on the frontline as the battle against Covid-19 takes its toll. In Islamic culture the burial must take place within the shortest period of time. In the majority of cases burials have taken place within 24 hours. In some incidents people are being buried within four hours of death. Bolton and Blackburn have had the most Muslim burials in the past year. There were approximately 290 Muslims buried in Bolton compared to 116 a year before. In Blackburn during 2020 there were 279 burials within the Muslim section, up from 171 a year before. The cemetery as a whole saw total burials rise from 396 to 577. November remains the most tragic month with 53 buried in the Muslim section.

The tragedy unfolded at the Zakariyya Jaame Masjid, Peace Street, Bolton on Saturday (January 23). Suleman Atcha and his friend were heading into the masjid to perform Zohar prayers which are conducted at 12.40pm. Mr Atcha, a father of two and taxi-driver had made his way to the mosque to take part in one of the five daily prayers. On entering the building he is said to have felt out of breath. He seated himself in the foyer area to rest but sadly suffered a heart attack and passed away. Edris Seth, Executive Committee member of the Zakariyya Jaame Mosque, said: “We are deeply saddened to witness one of our fellow worshippers pass away in front of our eyes.
