NEWPORT April is National Donate Life month, and on Thursday members of the organ donation community and Rhode Island lawmakers gathered on the steps of City Hall to tell their stories and encourage Rhode Island residents to register as organ donors.
In the United States, there are currently 108,000 citizens waiting to receive organ transplants, and 6,000 of those individuals reside in New England, and each year there are over 1 million tissue and eye transplants performed, according to a proclamation read by Newport Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano.
The state of Rhode Island has the goal of registering 50% of the driving public to be organ donors. To become an organ donor in Rhode Island one can sign up through the Department of motor vehicles or the following website: https://www.donatelife.net/register/
