announcer: this is cnn breaking news. you re watching cnn news central. i m boris sanchez in washington. we want to talk about the breaking news at a new york border crossing. the fbi is investigating a vehicle explosion there. this is at the rainbow bridge, u.s./canada border crossing. it s get to brynn gingras with the latest details. reporter: the fbi, the atf, the joint terrorism task force, federal authorities on the u.s. side and on the canada side are monitoring the situation trying to figure out what happened. what we know is that there was a car crossing into the u.s. from canada and what has been described as a crash at that crossing there at the rainbow bridge. then, a subsequent explosion is what the fbi is describing. whether or not this was sinister is not clear at this point. as you can imagine, at this point of entry it s going to be an uptick in security across that area. that is what we re seeing currently in response as this is still being investiga
happening at the same time, whether one is a diversionary one or other plans to happen simultaneously. so, whether this was an errant explosion, and the explosions were heading elsewhere, we don t know what the intended targets may have been, if this was not the target they selected. gillian: bill, obviously when you look at a situation like this, it s way too early in the process to talk about motivations, but do you have any sense based on just the geography, the very bare phones facts we have here, the fact this was likely a car bomb, that they were going from the u.s. or trying to go from the u.s. to canada. does that speak to you and your background expertise about what types of terror organizations might be interested in conducting something like this? yeah, it s very difficulty point to kind of come to any of those assumptions. certainly we know that the fbi director wray just over the past few days has reiterated concerns about potential terrorist activities, eman
accidentally stuck on the accelerator, and so then that drove into this or were they intentionally aiming for it. were there any other vehicles we re trying to transit statement, that are suspicious. are those vehicles being checked out? those are some of the questions and some of the things they would be investigating, certainly if they can get a license plate or vin number off this vehicle, they may identify who owned it, whether it was stolen or not, the background of it. there s all sorts of questions in things they could start to investigate to determine of course if there s any identification they could find of the occupants that would be helpful as well. so those are the types of things they ll look at and run it against anybody s prior, you know, do they have any sort of prior interactions with law enforcement or is it somebody that may have a known medical condition, such as a heart issue or other issue that could have led to them becoming unconscious before this inc
