manifesting in the classroom. it s impacting teachers on a daily basis. reporter: what effect does that have on the teacher s ability to teach the entire school? when you have a disproportionate number of students facing homelessness, you have to have resources, special attention, counseling support, mental health support. reporter: to help families like the nets, as they beat up the family support systems. and before and after school programs. him and other school officials even visiting students with low attendance rates. an initiative called i attend. reporter: how important is education to break a cycle of homelessness? it is probably the only take it. and i, i take myself as the example as that. reporter: after moving here from portugal as a teenager, he was homeless himself in miami, where he would labor serve his first stint as a superintendent. i remember sleeping under the bridges of miami, underneath the office that i
old brother. vanessa just started at the neighborhood high school across the street. [inaudible] especially since she is still stuck here. reporter: why is that the toughest? do you worry about your mom? i worry a lot about my mom. most of the time. reporter: her mom suffered a health scare when the school year began, and was in the hospital. vanessa had to stay home from school to take care of her brother. she worries that they will end up in foster care. vanessa says that taking care of her family let her to fill her first semester in eighth grade. reporter: it s hard sometimes to focus on school when so much is going on outside of school. yes, there were some moments where i did not pay attention to much in school. reporter: the stress and trauma felt by students it s manifesting in the classroom. it s impacting teachers on a daily basis. reporter: what effect does
