things because of the rivers and mountains. on the other hand, you re not willing to go for the $25 billion but are you willing to go for more than what s included in your proposal? absolutely. i think we could and should support several billion in appropriations and come up with a pathway where a ten-year plan presented to us by dhs gets annual appropriations with a trigger. i m working with a common sense coalition, a group of about two dozen senators, republicans and democrats to come up with a consensus proposal that would allow us to invest in border security while still maintaining a critical oversight role. one of the questions is what senator mitch mcconnell will be allowed to be produced on the floor as what he calls the base bill. do you have any sense on what immigration measure the majority leader will ultimately bring to the floor as he has promised to do? i don t know yet what he might bring forward.
really what we re talking about now is are they going to pass a government funding a short-term government funding measure, not pass an immigration measure. that seems as though i think that a little bit of that got lost in last thursday s meeting because of the folks on what word he used. the fact was that that was the moment, that moment has now passed and you don t dick durbin said earlier today, it took us four months to get here. these things take time. you can t do it in 2 1/2 day period. the proposal was never going to be the final deal, right. just a launching point. once trump went down that road, it became a first step that just got cut out from under them. another thing, i m with david, i ve written about this, that the word, this specific word doesn t matter. the one thunging i do want to address, we re still at the point where we have two united states senators, lindsey graham and dick durbin saying he said
we ll close by asking our reporters to share a tidbit from their notebooks so you can get a glimpse of some of the biggest political headlines in the works right now. julie, i ll start with you. well, we ve talked a lot about this near-term negotiation on immigration reform, and a potential bill to normalize the d.r.e.a.m.ers but president trump has actually quietly been talking about a much broader immigration measure that could come later if they re able to strike that deal, which would be basically a way of addressings situation of the other 11 million undocumented immigrants who are in this country if they re not felons, finding a way to give them legal status in exchange for some future stiffer work site enforcement, bigger enforcement efforts on the border as well and even though it seems like a long shot to imagine that something like that could happen, think folks are looking at this d.r.e.a.m.er deal as a potential prelude to something a lot bigger. big plans ahead. we ll
