been on several sides of this issue. i think that one thing is clear, despite the fact the government will be reopening, it looks like, if things happen as it seems they will, there is no change in the hardened positions on immigration and daca. so the president still has a decision to make, a challenge for his leadership. is he going to do what he s talked about several times and do something for the d.r.e.a.m.ers, or is he going to take a harder line on this? this simply moves things down the road three weeks or so, but certainly a sense of relief here that the white house, and of course the president is going to try to reframe this as a win for him, that democrats blinked. it s partially true, but i think the bigger question here is what happens after this? will the president stay disengaged or will he re-engage on this immigration fight because that s the next thing to come. he ll be giving a state of the art union address next week
d.r.e.a.m.ers, it seems pretty clear based on the republicans and democrats i ve spoken to, the republicans are resistant to any notion that d.r.e.a.m.ers become citizens is. they re haggling over, can they pay into social security? do they even get it if they do pay it? should there ever be a path to citizenship? are they permanent workers? this suspect bill of love, make them americans in some way. that is something people should know. right. and we should also remember our recent history in the immigration fight in washington. that a path to citizenship is often where the deals have been derailed. it s not just that. it is not the only sticking point. there is a wall. this issue of the lottery, of chain migration. they are all wrapped together. and the president has hard line staff who is not there. or maybe he likes that as a buffer to hold all of this up. but the pressure points here,
bipartisan group of 25 senators or so who say they are already starting to work more together on what their immigration effort will look like. graham said he s out there trying to recruit more people. this group of 30 that helped force this compromised deal starting to feel their muscle here a little bit and get the sense they might be able to drive policy decisions too. so i think we re looking down the barrel of another two or three weeks of this immigration fight being very intense and both of those groups trying to influence the president. what s going to happen? are you going to see moderates on the democratic side, moderates on the republican side come to an immigration deal, one that can pass the senate and potentially the house, and put that forward to the president, or are you going to see, and this is a bit of a crystal ball reading, or the hardliners in the house and senate try to influence mitch mcconnell to move forward to the right before they can get anything else to

is better for the democrats. donald trump is known to be someone who will be influenced by the last person who spoke to him, so ifschumer is the last person to talk to him, that could be dangerous for the republican party. there is another side to this and that is that obviously he could say one thing to chuck schumer and then change his mind because part of the problem here has clearly been that the president has made conflicting statements about some of the details of this deal at that meeting that was open to the public. it seemed very clear that he didn t have a clear idea about where he stood on some of these specific parts of the immigration fight. i don t think there is any doubt that certainly among democrats the president by his comments, s-hole, s-house, whatever you say, he definitely made it worse. so you do wonder if the president decided not go to mar-a-lago, they have a big rnc
