they are now feeling the heat. it is not helping the president. it is not helping the republicans to be the owners of this shutdown. we re asking the president to open up government. we are giving him a republican path to do that. why would he not do it? why would he not do it? nancy pelosi walking away there. mary bruce live on the hill. but we did hear her say that we are offering the republicans a pathway. the president says he won t budge on the wall. pelosi says no money for the wall. so, what s this pathway? reporter: well, david, i m told by a source familiar with what happened in that meeting that the democrats repeatedly pressed the president to see if he would at least commit to opening the agencies that are unrelated to this immigration fight. but david, the president s only response, quote, i would look foolish. david? all right, welcome to 2019. mary bruce live on the hill. thank you. the other story we re following as we come on tonight, the news conference
have that component of whatever immigration reform is coming along, you ve really got nothing with strep supporters. leland: but what is it about the semantics? you just use the word border security which is what the democrats like to say. the president says build the wall, meaning a large, impenetrable barrier. it makes you think that back to, more than a year ago or so we were going to this immigration fight and remember there was going to be daca for the entire wall. you have to wonder if that would have been a good deal to take back then. well, yeah. here is the thing, i think both sides are wrong on this.i think there is a component for dealing with things that people have already come here but are not committing any crimes. but there has to be security first. maybe that deal would have looked a lot better. i think middle america wants to see that they is serious action border security. i think they see that they will
yesterday on fox & friends, they pressed mark meadows, house freedom caucuses chair, he was blunt. what did you do? we failed. we fumbled. we have fox team coverage with two of the teammates that never drop the ball. peter doocy live on the hill with where the shutdown sits at this hour. and kristen fisher with the story that impacts the immigration fight. good evening. good evening, ed. this is definitely a blow to the president s immigration policies. what this means is that people who cross in to the united states illegally will still be allowed to claim asylum. remember, the trump administration has been trying to impose a new policy only allowing asylum claims made at specific points of entry. last month a u.s. district judge in san francisco ruled the new policies violated u.s. immigration laws. then the ninth circuit court of appeals which president trump called a big thorn in our side on multiple issues refused the administration s request to lift that lower
president and the defense department. imagine the kerosene is too mild. the president has steered congressional republicans into a box canyon in the immigration fight and dropped in a barrel bomb with these actions on national security. this is unmitigated, unfettered, blind lashing out from the president of the united states. i think what he s doing is he is having been reminded by fox, et cetera, that he ran on the wall, he is now remembering the other things he ran on, which is the neoisolationist message. is he grasping? everybody is pissed about the border wall, see grasp he is grasping to the political identity that he knew that got him here in the first place, that s my take on it. it is politically at this point disastrous. he is remembering when it was the good thing to do in early days of securing the republican nomination. he seems to be fighting for his own base now, which is an odd
showdown in the oval office just last week, democrats really sort of taking, you know, the offensive on this. and it s not been that hard. president trump himself is sort of owning the idea of a shutdown. i think so much of president trump s politics is all about his base, and his base likes this fight over a border wall. they like the immigration fight. so that s the direction that president trump heads every time. the difference now is you have a democratic party that is in power and is about to control one chamber of congress. so i think they re welcoming the fight as well and view this as a way to show bad governance on the part of president trump and speak to those suburban voters that brought them control of the house. darlene, are you aware of any concessions at all that the president would be willing to make to avert a partial shutdown? i m not aware of any concessions he would be willing to make to avert a shutdown.
