Illinois IT officials warn of near-constant cybersecurity attacks

Normal, IL, USA / www.cities929.com Jul 19, 2021 | 5:04 PM (The Center Square) – The state of Illinois is constantly under a barrage of attacks from malicious actors looking to steal valuable data and other assets or even grind important systems to a halt, according to state officials charged with keeping them at bay. The Illinois House Cybersecurity, Data Analytics and IT Committee got a state of the state’s electronic assets Thursday from the principals at the Department of Innovation Technology. Adam Ford, chief information security officer at DOIT, said the state’s assets are seeing countless malicious attempts to breach their defenses every day.

When NBC 5 Responds caught up with Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul last July, he showed us the debit card that showed his name was used by con artists trying to tap into his unemployment benefits. This month, we asked Raoul how his case turned out.  “Well, you know for me, I didn’t know what was going on because it was early in the process, Raoul said. So I was unaware, even as the Attorney General … of the scope of the fraud taking place.   “Unaware” as we all were. Now we know that nationally, Raoul’s name was one of thousands swept up in a massive case of unemployment benefits fraud. The US Department of Labor now estimates at least $63 billion was paid out improperly in claims. Much of that was fraud, according to an audit by the US Department of Labor s Office of the Inspector General .

Pritzker Plans to Expand Vaccine Eligibility, Announce New COVID Reopening Phase: Sources Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he’s never felt “more optimistic” about where the state is heading in regards to the coronavirus pandemic, and he appears to be set to announce some big changes to the state’s plans on Thursday. Sources tell NBC 5 that Pritzker plans to expand eligibility for coronavirus vaccines to all state residents age 16 or older beginning on April 12, a massive change from the current structure of the vaccination plan. Currently, the state is in Phase 1B-Plus of its vaccination plan, with all state residents over the age of 65 and all residents over the age of 16 with certain comorbidities being eligible.
