The Supreme Court cautioned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday against causing undue inconvenience to district collectors in Tamil Nadu. This came after the Tamil Nadu government alleged that the collectors were kept waiting at the ED s office for long hours.
The bench had in February lifted the stay imposed by the Madras High Court on the summons issued by the ED against five district collectors in Tamil Nadu in connection with the sand mining scam case.
The Supreme Court today questioned how the Tamil Nadu government could have filed a plea before the High Court challenging the summons issued to five district collectors by the ED in a mining scam-money laundering case.
The Madras High Court said prima facie it appeared that by issuing the summons, ED was trying to identify the proceeds of a crime that it could then build a case around.
“If they are so concerned, then why no action in BJP ruled states like UP, Maharashtra that have hundreds of cases of illegal mining?" the Tamil Nadu government's counsel argued before the Madras High Court today.
