The criteria for what products are “clean” is usually more about what ingredients these products don’t contain - namely parabens, sulfates, phthalates and artificial fragrances. “While the term ‘clean beauty’ is often a contentious term and a very grey area,” says Zoe Philpott, co-founder of online beauty retailer Ines, “there is a consensus that ‘clean’ refers to products that favour natural ingredients, yet often incorporate synthetics that have been deemed safe for people and the planet.”
