worse. and joe worth pointing out too, joe, this is about less than 20 miles from columbine high school in littleton, colorado. as our kusa reporter said, we don t make comparison to columbine lightly, we don t ever make them, but fair this morning with 14 people dead, to begin making that comparison. and when i first heard the news, willie, watching your show, i, obviously, because of the location, went back to columbine, but also, those two disturbed students were obsessed with the matrix and actually dressed up like the character neo and then went to school shooting up. just terrible, terrible tragedy. we ll continue with developments and willie, as news comes in, you ll be getting us up to date on that. we ll be updating you on the half hour as well. in other news today, intense fighting has been raging in
awe of the chaos that s their neighborhood now. for viewers just joining us, we re watching the scene in aurora, colorado. this is the apartment building where the 24-year-old shooting suspect james holmes reside. he s the one that police have in custody from the shooting that happened at a premier midnight showingaurora, colorado of the batman movie. walking in with full gear on, his face covered, throwing a gas canister into the crowd and then opening fire. our thanks to kusa s jeremy jololla from his report from the scene. our chris van zandt, nbc analyst, joins me now to talk more about this. clint, as we re hearing the suspect in custody, holmes gave police the tip that there were explosives in his vehicle as well as the apartment potentially booby trapped. as you were watching this earlier, we were all, i think, a little taken aback at how vigorously they were going at
but it s been a horrific day. obviously for this entire community. but also for the family and friends of people who were trying to desperately get information about whether their loved ones were in that theater. whether they were among the people who were killed or injured. it s been a terrible, terrible situation here. where i m standing which is right across from the movie theater and not far from here you have the booby trapped apartment of the suspect. let me tell you. talking to officials, they are saying that it looks extremely elaborate. the question is, is it real? obviously there s a huge security concern there. in addition to that, there is evidence in that apartment they want to preserve. hold on one minute, chris. joining me now outside the suspect s apartment is kusa reporter jeremy johalla.
coming from eyewitness accounts of what happened. the dark knight rises, the new batman movie, people are going to a midnight screening of it inside the theater. there are reports that a masked gunman, possible gunmans, stood up and just began shooting. also reports that they may have been wearing some kind of gas mask and that there could have been tear gas that was let go inside the theater. kusa has been on the scene since this began, and more information continues to trickle out. and one of the ways that, obviously, these days information is coming through is twitt twitter. little by little, people are accounting what they ve seen on, you know, at the theater, people that were there, people that weren t there but hearing things on local radio. there are dozens, as you can see there, police on the scene trying to determine exactly what
