Why insecurity is deteriorating in the South East

Vanguard News Translate Why insecurity is deteriorating in the South East On By Ikechukwu Amaechi WHAT could account for the heightened state of insecurity in the South East? This was the poser five governors and heads of the security agencies in the region raised when they met on Sunday, April 11, 2021 in Owerri, Imo State capital, during the first South East Security Summit. Many people are asking their own question: Don’t they know the reason? While it will be a surprise that they, indeed, don’t know the answer to the riddle, it is not a surprise that the meeting decided to play the ostrich by approving as part of 15-point communiqué that “the acting IGP (Inspector-General of Police) and other security chiefs do invite the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, to find out the reason for increasing insecurity of the Southeast,” while resolving “to maintain a joint security vigilante for the Southeast oth

In Innocent s death, Nigeria has lost a worthy ambassador

Vanguard News In Innocent’s death, Nigeria has lost a worthy ambassador On By Ikechukwu Amaechi WHENEVER a friend calls to announce the sudden death of another, the tendency is to be in denial as the mind intuitively refuses to process the information. That was exactly what happened when Eze Anaba, Editor of Vanguard newspaper, called at precisely 11.53 pm on Saturday night to announce Innocent’s demise. “Ikechukwu, Innocent Chukwuma is dead,” Eze intoned gravely. I told him to stop the silly, reckless joke. But there was this mournful tinge in his voice that panicked me even as I told myself it was not possible. Who told you, I asked him, praying fervently that he will tell me it was an April Fool’s joke on April 3. “I am not joking. Chidi just informed me of the tragedy,” Eze insisted. Of course, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, should know.

An administration and its silver linings

Vanguard News An administration and its silver linings On By Ikechukwu Amaechi IN an attempt to muddle the waters, spin doctors in the Presidency and their cohorts seem to have devised a new strategy. Not contented anymore with just calling people who dare criticise President Muhammadu Buhari, no-matter how constructive, haters, and being generally dismissive of any opinion that disagrees with their holy grail, they are now blaming Nigerians for the country’s woes. On March 28, a friend of mine who believes that Buhari is beyond reproach forwarded to me an article trending in the social media. Titled: “The problem with Nigeria”, the author, @harrydaniyan, narrated how he “carried out a social experiment” by standing up to unruly motorists, who, in a desperate attempt to avoid traffic gridlock in Utako, Abuja, flouted traffic laws by driving on the sidewalk meant for pedestrians. He stood up to the indocile drivers even when everyone else acquiesced to their unruliness

When an image maker becomes an image wrecker

Vanguard News Translate When an image maker becomes an image wrecker On By Ikechukwu Amaechi Last week, my friend and former colleague, Oguwike Nwachuku, responded to my article penultimate Thursday titled, “Uzodimma: The governor as a quisling.” Typically, Oguwike, media aide to Governor Hope Uzodimma, attacked my person, making baseless claims on what he described as my political affiliations, motive for my writings and presumed hatred for President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC. I will come back to these infantile insinuations shortly. But first things first. He called me “one Ikechukwu Amaechi”. That is too childish and a gross misapplication of grammar. Until a year ago when Uzodimma poached him from  TheNiche, Oguwike was my subordinate in the office.
