Ijaw youths suspend planned siege on NDDC headquarters

Ijaw youths suspend planned siege on NDDC headquarters On By Samuel Oyadongha YENAGOA Ijaw youths under the aegis of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC)  worldwide on Sunday announced the suspension of the planned “mother of all protest” at the headquarters of NDDC in Port Harcourt to allow the Sole Administrator superintend over the conclusion of the forensic audit of the commission. They, however, warned that the appointment of their kinsman, Engr Udengs Eradiri, a former President of the IYC as Special Adviser on Youth Matters to the Sole Administrator should not be taken as a means to silence their agitation for a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Ijaw youths Vs NDDC

NDDC A couple of weeks ago a faction of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) based in Abuja invaded the office of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Godswill Akpabio and disrupted the normal flow of work there. They were saying with placards that they do not want a Sole Administrator for the NDDC. What they want is for the Board to be put in place. Why they went to Akpabio’s office is baffling because such decisions are taken only by the President, not the Minister. The Minister can make recommendations; he can have his say but the President will have his way. Perhaps they were subscribing to the African prescriptive proverb that the best way to talk to the deaf is to talk to his brother. The inbuilt wisdom here is that the brother knows the formula for getting the message to him despite his deafness. But the issue of putting a board in place for the NDDC is not new and the IYC members are not the first to raise it. It is a legitimate issue on which all of us are on the same page

Akpabio is reportedly said to have made the comment on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving the interim report of the commission from the forensic auditors. A statement by the National Spokesman of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Mr Ebilade Erekefe, on Friday insisted that the appointment of a sole administrator which had triggered protests in the region was ordered by a Court and not the Federal Government.
