The Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has asked officers of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) not to hesitate in defending themselves by using firearms.
IGP Adamu stated this on Tuesday when he visited Imo state for an on-the-spot assessment after the attack on the command headquarters by gunmen on Monday.
The gunmen also attacked the Nigerian Correctional Services freeing an unspecified number of prison inmates.
Channels Television gathered that the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday after which the hoodlums set the facilities ablaze.

During the attack, one person suspected to be a fleeing inmate was hit by a bullet while carrying his travel bag.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has ordered the immediate deployment of Police Intervention and Stabilization Forces to Oyo State.
This was announced in a statement signed on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba.
Mba said the teams have been deployed to reclaim the public space, reinforce security and bolster public confidence in the areas affected by the recent crisis in the State.
“The deployments, consisting largely of intelligence and operational assets of the Force, include four (4) Units of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), seasoned operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau, and one (1) operational/surveillance Police helicopter from the Police Air-wing department.

An Abuja based legal practitioner, Maxwell Okpara on Wednesday asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop Mr Mohammed Adamu from parading himself as the Inspector General (IG) of Police.
Okpara made the request in a suit filed before the court challenging Adamu’s stay in office as IG beyond February 1, 2021.
Defendants in the suit are President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammed Adamu, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and Nigeria Police council.
The lawyer in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/106/2021, is also praying the court to declare as illegal all actions taken by Adamu after February 1, 2021.
