concerns in nebraska as the water heads in their direction. thank you, indra. 45 minutes past the hour. in italy this morning one of the most complicated salvage efforts in history is a big step closer to completion. the costa concordia is upright for the first time in 20 months since it was grounded killing 32 people on board. matthew chance is in italy and is watching all of the salvage efforts. a lot of people skeptical they would not be able to see this sight. reporter: a lot of people were worried. particularly the people who live on giglio. if it had gone wrong this ship could have turned into the biggest environmental disaster this part of the world has ever seen. it inside is 20,000 liters of toxic fluid and the fuel from the engine. chemical waste from the cleaning
flood the ship and it started tilting. haunting images show passengers scrambling down the side and now they hope to recover the body of the waiter hailed as a hero for giving out his own life jacket, and another passenger still missing. and on board freezers for the food and ice cream now badly decomposed. and the bags and personal belongings of the 4,000 passengers will be returned to their rightful owners. if the colossal costa concordia doesn t break apart. abc news, giglio, italy. there were 4,000 passengers on that boat. it s also an amazing feat that they got so many off of the boat safely. yes. two of them passed away. they are hoping to recover their bodies which they still haven t been able to do. a lot of heros in the rescue mission. of course the captain has been set up as somebody who blew it on this one and didn t act well afterwards and that is winding its way through the legal system.
would say, and from the environmental point of view, i have to say there are no evidence so far of any impact to the environment. the environment in this case particularly relevant because giglio is a wildlife sanctuary. what happens next is the hull will have to be repaired so there will be no further leakage. they want to make sure when this ship is finally towed to the chopped up into scrap sometime next spring, there won t be any environmental damage along the path. martha: thank you very much. we all remember the story of the captain of that ship. there are allegations he abandoned the ship before.
