World AIDS Day 2022: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS has led to lakhs of deaths globally. On World AIDS day, which is observed every year on December 1, the United Nations and counties worldwide try to raise awareness about the illness and educate people on how to prevent it.
AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which progressively reduces the effectiveness of the immune system of the body thereby leaving the individual incapable to fight against infections.
This week’s news that a third person has been “cured” of HIV through a unique transplant of stem cells has given hope for a larger-scale way to beat back the HIV epidemic that has plagued the world for decades. But while this case is certainly cause for celebration, experts involved in the effort say we are still a long way from a universal cure.
